Pressure Ulcer Wound Prevention and Therapy

People often ask us about pressure ulcer wound prevention and therapy. While the internet provides many potential answers, we’ll rely upon The Journal of American Medical Association (“JAMA”) as a credible source and recommend people to read Preventing Pressure Ulcers: A Systematic Review and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers: A Systematic Review for a good starting point. The authors conclude that they cannot tell which preventive or therapeutic strategies really work. Wow! We were spending $11B (in 2006 - 2008 when the articles were written) per year without knowing if products actually prevented or treated pressure ulcers.

Here we are in 2014, and our need for an effective product to prevent or treat pressure ulcers has only increased. To date, there still isn’t a clinical study that compares available support surfaces under uniform testing standards. Why? The following represent some possible answers among the many available:

  • The large, profitable companies do not have enough money to conduct such studies.
  • It’s too challenging to compare the best selling products against each other without offending someone.
  • The large companies have done such studies but the data does not show sufficient benefit to justify purchase price.

Wouldn’t it be great if consumers knew if one product was better than another, and the consumer could decide if the products are worth the price difference? Wouldn’t patients benefit from knowing which mattress or support surface works better when they are lying flat on their backs or at an incline to watch TV?

PRS Medical is a medical device company with cost effective products that produce the lowest peak pressures, as compared to leading specialty support surfaces currently available. PRS’ products are based upon the laws of physics and created, designed, and tested with scientific rigor. PRS has described its proprietary technologies in its many patent applications that are publicly available for review by anyone. We hope you try us out, see for yourself and discover why we are so excited by our products and their potential to help the many potential and actual pressure ulcer patients.
